56 — Whose Image?

WHOSE IMAGE? (LUKE 20:19-26)

Because you are made in God’s image, your allegiance rightly belongs to him and no other.

  • ONE PASSAGE, MANY APPROACHES

  • HYPOCRISY, FLATTERY, AND CRAFTINESS (VV. 19-23)

  • WHOSE IMAGE? (VV. 24-26)

  • THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD (VV. 19-20, 25-26; ROMANS 8:28-29; 2 CORINTHIANS 4:4; COLOSSIANS 1:15)

Discussion Starters

Monday—How does this passage speak to the Christian’s relationship to the state? Is this all this passage has to say?

Tuesday—Why did the religious leaders choose this question to try and trap Jesus? The word for “pretending” in verse 20 is the word hypocrite. How were they being hypocritical?

Wednesday—What does the fact that Caesar’s image is on the denarius mean when it comes to paying taxes? In what sense is it Caesar’s?

Thursday—What are the things that belong to God in verse 25? What does it mean to give them back to God?

Friday—What does it mean that Jesus is the image of the invisible God? (2 Corinthians 4:4; Colossians 1:15) How did he give himself to the Father?
